Year Country Title Summary
2005 Canada ABS Policies in Canada: Scoping the Questions and Issues This government paper identifies the parameters of ABS as a policy issue by identifying its key policy components. It translates some of the key principles contained in the Convention on Biological Diversity into concrete issues that need to be considered from a Federal/ Provincial/Territorial approach. It explores the connections with other relevant and key Federal/Provincial/Territorial policy issues and sectors, such as the contribution ABS can make to economic development through the bio-based economy, its role in fostering sustainable development strategies, and its relationship with the patent system. It also proposes a set of principles that will guide the ABS policy development process at all levels.
Global The OECD Biotechnology Statistics - 2006 This report provides statistics on biotechnology activities in up to 23 OECD countries and 2 observer countries, plus China (Shanghai), based on the results of 33 separate studies. The report addresses economic and activity data on biotechnology and innovation, and builds on the extensive work of the OECD and national experts to improve the comparability of biotechnology statistics. The results should provide a valuable source of information on biotechnology for policy makers, academics and business managers.
Global Beyond Borders: Ernst & Young's Global Biotechnology Report 2007 This report presents the latest look at the global biotechnology industry and presents geographic reporting for the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Articles cover emerging challenges and risks and include perspectives from global biotechnology and pharmaceuticals industry leaders. Although the reports are available for purchase, the Ernst & Young website provides free regional summaries of biotechnology statistics.
UK A Study into the Prospects for Marine Biotechnology Development in the United Kingdom - Vol. 1: Strategy This report, commissioned by the Foresight Panel, takes a look at the prospects of biotechnology in the UK, and reviews the UK and international marine biotechnology market to come up with a workable strategy. Although UK-specific, the report contains good information on markets and valuation that is useful for a broader audience.
Global Valuation and Exploitation of Intellectual Property This study was published in the Working Paper series of the OECD Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry, and was written by Shigeki Kamiyama, Jerry Sheehan, Catalina Martinez. reviews recent evidence and analyses about the current status of valuation and exploitation of patents, with the aim of informing development of related policy. First, it examines the broadening set of channels through which firms aim to exploit their IP. It complements this firm-level perspective with a review of macroeconomic statistics related to the development of technology markets in major geographic regions. Second, the paper reviews various approaches to the valuation of patents. Finally, the paper examines the range of policy initiatives that have been undertaken by governments of OECD countries to foster and improve the valuation and the exploitation of patents.

Global Research Use of Patented Knowledge This study was published in the Working Paper series of the OECD Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry, and was written by Chris Dent, Paul Jensen, Sophie Waller and Beth Webster. The paper reviews issues related to research access to patented inventions, with a particular focus on the role of research exemptions (or experimental use exemptions) in protecting such access. It outlines factors that may affect the ability of researchers to access patented inventions for legitimate research purposes, it reviews evidence of current and anticipated limitations on access, and explores different options for the formulation of research exemptions that balance research use and patent holder's rights.
2007 Global A summary of existing information on marine biological prospecting in Antarctica The Antarctic Biological Prospecting Database provides details of research and commercialised products arising from biological samples that were sourced from the Antarctic region. A joint initiative of the Belgian Ministry of Environment and the UnitedNations Environment Programme (UNEP), the database has been developed by the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS). This report provides a summary of the marine-related content in that database.
2008 European Community Communication from the Commission to the European Parliament, the Council and the European Economic and Social Committee - An Industrial Property Rights Strategy for Europe At the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on IP, genetic resources, traditional knowledge and folklore (IGC), the European Community submitted a proposal in 2004 for establishing a mandatory requirement for a patent applicant to disclose the source/origin of any genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge used in its patent applications[68]. This requirement could help indigenous communities from where these genetic resources and traditional knowledge originate to allow verification of compliance with rules on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) in order to share the benefits from the commercial exploitation of patents and also assist Patent Offices in examining the novelty of these inventions. The Commission therefore continues to support efforts towards adoption of the proposal and notes that patent laws in some Member States contain provisions on the disclosure of the geographic origin of biological matter in patent applications.
2007 Australia, New Zealand Australian bioprospecting frameworks This report compiled by New Zealand looks at bioprospecting and its regulation in Australia.
